Mel Gibson’s ‘The Passion of the Christ’ Returning to Theaters with a Special Preview of the ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’
The faith-based film industry is booming these days, and it owes much of its success to the pioneering efforts of Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. Released in 2004 when faith-based movies were less common and far riskier, the film resonated with audiences. It earned an impressive $612.1 million worldwide and became the highest-grossing R-rated film in history (until it was finally surpassed by Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024). Its triumph proved to Hollywood that there was a large audience eager to experience and support such movies.

Decades later, the celebrated film is finally receiving a long-awaited follow up, with The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One and Part Two set to release May 6, 2027, and May 25, 2028, respectively. But audiences won’t need to wait that long to see Jim Caviezel’s Jesus back on screen. The Passion of the Christ—now remastered in 4K with Dolby Atmos sound—is returning to theaters from September 10th through September 17th. Not only can viewers experience the story on the big screen again, but they will also be treated to an exclusive sneak peak of The Resurrection of the Christ.
The faith-based industry has grown in the 20+ years since The Passion of the Christ’s original release, and off-screen controversies have at times clouded its legacy, yet it remains one of the most important and beloved biblical films ever created. Kevin Grayson, president of Worldwide Distribution for Lionsgate, said of the re-release: “The Passion of the Christ remains one of the most extraordinary theatrical experiences ever created. For millions of people, it was far more than a film—it became a powerful shared cultural and faith experience. Bringing it back to theaters in a stunning new restoration allows longtime audiences to experience it in an entirely new way while inviting a new generation to discover it in theaters for the very first time.”
Tickets go on sale July 24, 2026.
