What Christians Can Learn From The Record-Breaking Success of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

Swimming upstream of the recent narrative about “superhero fatigue” in the wake of an extended string of commercial and critical failures in the comic-book genre, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been setting Hollywood box office records since day one. Incredibly, after spending six weeks atop the weekly charts, the film surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) to become the #1 movie of all time at the domestic box office.

Box office pundits may point toward inflation and increased ticket prices and dispute the film’s status as the true #1 film, but the fact remains that the fourth entry in the Tom Holland led Spider-Man films clearly resonated with audiences in near-unprecedented ways.

In many ways, movies are like mirrors. You can learn a lot about a culture by looking at the stories that connect with people. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is clearly resonating with people, particularly the GenZ generation, and the movie’s emotional story about social isolation and loneliness may be a big reason why.

Check out our discussion below on what the film’s success reveals about today’s culture and how Christians can respond faithfully to a hurt and lonely world.
