The Spokesmen: Christian Music Pioneers Remaster and Release Their Gospel-Centered Albums for a New Generation

In 1963, four high school students from St. Petersburg, Florida joined together to create something incredible, a Christian band with an infectious sound that would help launch the Christian Contemporary Music genre. Cousins Mike Otto and Dave Shipley united with brothers Bruce and Rod Lynam to become the four founding members of The Spokesmen. The band would include many more members throughout their successful 10-year-run. In 1969, they released their award-winning album, Speak Out, which solidified their hold on young believers’ attention. Before disbanding in 1973, the band toured across the country, playing for over 100,000 people every year.
The Spokesmen created a sound much like the Beach Boys with flavors of The Beatles and crooning similar to Elvis Presley. Their music is evangelism expressed through song. Snappy, fun, and theologically sound, their lyrics range from encouragement to other believers, reflections on their own personal faith, and, most notably, simply sharing the Gospel with anyone who will listen.
This year, the band has remastered and released three albums, Speak Out, Free, and Knowing/Caring, so that listeners can revisit (or discover for the first time) their iconic, God-glorifying sound. They also plan on reforming the band with new vocalists, tours, and songs—both from the original members and from rookies—that mix their classic 1960s sound with a modern twist.
