Grammy-Winning Christian Artist, Lauren Daigle, to Sing at Super Bowl
On Sunday, February 9th, the Kansas City Chiefs—the two-time defending champions—will take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. As always, in addition to the highly anticipated football game itself, the broadcast will also feature a star-studded collection of musical talent and entertainment. Kendrick Lamar—fresh off winning multiple Grammy awards—will perform the iconic halftime show, and audiences can likely expect to see frequent shots of pop superstar Taylor Swift cheering on boyfriend Travis Kelce.
Viewers who tune in to the broadcast for the pre-game ceremonies will also hear contemporary Christian artist Lauren Daigle. Raised in Louisiana, the two-time Grammy Award–winning singer will perform a rendition of “America the Beautiful” alongside Trombone Shorty. With a collection of certified Platinum songs and prestigious awards, 33-year-old Daigle has experienced plenty of success, but performing at the Super Bowl represents arguably the biggest stage of her career. Speaking of the opportunity, she said, “To be able to offer a sound of hope for people in this city, to sing out over the city and from the city into the rest of the world, is going to be one of my favorite things, maybe ever.”
As with many CCM artists who have achieved mainstream success, Daigle has endured much criticism through the years. The Google results for the search prompt “Lauren Daigle Christian” brings up countless articles and commentary debating the validity of her Christian faith based on her song lyrics or public statements. Much of the criticism stems from an iHeart radio interview in 2018 during which she answered the question of whether homosexuality is a sin with uncertainty: “I can’t say one way or the other. I’m not God.”
While criticism is inevitable for someone—particularly a Christian—in the public eye and may be reignited due to her widely televised Super Bowl appearance, Daigle herself strives to be a positive influence. In the lead up to her Super Bowl appearance, she teamed up with New Orleans Saints LB Demario Davis for an event called Super Bowl LIX Night of Freedom, a time of music and worship to raise awareness for the fight against human trafficking. The Super Bowl will feature no shortage of heightened drama and captivating storylines, but kicking off the festivities by having a Christian artist sing about God’s grace for America is a great place to start.
