Monthly Music Recommendations: Top 5 Christian Songs for September 2026

Fall is upon us, which means it’s time for a playlist refresh. Here are some songs to add to your fall listening.

“My Journey to the Sky” – by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Marie Knight, Sam Price Trio

With a classic gospel sound, this song features a simple but impressive piano accompaniment and the powerful voices of Tharpe and Knight. Tharpe was a somewhat controversial artist, performing spiritual music in nightclubs, theatres, and other establishments that are typically considered secular. She has been a powerful force in the creation of the pop-gospel genre.

“Take Me To The Water” – Nina Simone

In this song, the instantly recognizable voice of Simone is backed by an unpolished but beautiful choir. She repeats, “Take me to the water to be baptized.” This song equates baptism with going home (perhaps to our heavenly home?) and features a skilled piano accompaniment. Despite its 2:49 minute runtime, this track never feels rushed.

“Gotta Serve Somebody” – Bob Dylan

Another uniquely powerful voice, Dylan reminds listeners that they’re “gonna have to serve somebody. It may be the Devil or it may be the Lord, but you’re gonna have to serve somebody.” The jazzy, head-bobbing tune conveys a potent message.

“Hail to the Lord’s Anointed” – Indelible Grace Music, Sandra McCracken

This arrangement is bolstered by a full band, with McCracken’s voice soaring above the drums. She sings, “Hail to the Lord’s anointed, great David’s greater Son!” Indelible Grace Music offers classic (but not tired) church music that’s easy to follow and makes listeners want to sing along.

“creature” – half alive

This song was popular a few years ago, and its Christian undertones are worth revisiting. The electronic sound of this song (and band) seeps into the cracks of your brain, and the lyrics are sneakily Christian. The vocalists sing, “I am creation, both haunted and holy. Made in glory. Even the depths of the night cannot blind me. When You guide me. Creature only.” This song is one of my personal favorites.

Thanks for tuning in monthly for new music recommendations! I’ve created a Spotify playlist (I apologize to Apple Music users out there) that I will update with songs from each month’s list. See you in October!
